My Review – Long Black Veil by Jennifer Finney Boylan

41xXU74O4gL

Synopsis

On a warm August night in 1980, six college students sneak into the dilapidated ruins of Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary, looking for a thrill. With a pianist, a painter and a teacher among them, the friends are full of potential. But it’s not long before they realize they are locked in—and not alone. When the friends get lost and separated, the terrifying night ends in tragedy, and the unexpected, far-reaching consequences reverberate through the survivors’ lives. As they go their separate ways, trying to move on, it becomes clear that their dark night in the prison has changed them all. Decades later, new evidence is found, and the dogged detective investigating the cold case charges one of them—celebrity chef Jon Casey— with murder. Only Casey’s old friend Judith Carrigan can testify to his innocence.

But Judith is protecting long-held secrets of her own – secrets that, if brought to light, could destroy her career as a travel writer and tear her away from her fireman husband and teenage son. If she chooses to help Casey, she risks losing the life she has fought to build and the woman she has struggled to become. In any life that contains a “before” and an “after,” how is it possible to live one life, not two?

Weaving deftly between 1980 and the present day, and told in an unforgettable voice, Long Black Veil is an intensely atmospheric thriller that explores the meaning of identity, loyalty, and love. Readers will hail this as Boylan’s triumphant return to fiction.

~My Review~

This story didn’t turn out like I thought it would. I don’t mean that in a bad way either. The characters were very well written. The story was good but also sad. For me at least. Something that happened a long time ago, seemed to affect everyone involved and most felt their life didn’t amount to much due to living partly in the past. There was one character in particular that my heart hurt for. This character made some pretty hard choices that seemed selfish at the time. They needed to be made for them to find their happiness.

All in all this is a pretty great read. Slow moving at the beginning. Jumping around to each character threw me off, but I caught on and it was full speed ahead after that. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and plan on checking out more from her. I give this 5 stars!

I was super excited to try these. I was also a little wary, not gonna lie. I haven’t had the best luck with drugstore makeup. I know I know they’ve been improved but still….

Let’s get to my thoughts shall we?

I was impressed and in love! The foundation is creamy and a little goes a long way. I didn’t know that and put on a little too much the first time. Oops! It has a spatula type applicator, which I dug because I can put it straight on my face. Great coverage!

The next day I decided to use all of the products. The concealer is creamy as well. Great coverage without using a lot of product.

The pressed powder was a little weird. I couldn’t pick up the product with my brush or sponge. I scraped the top part a little and that seemed to fix my issue. It’s light and great for my touch ups. It doesn’t come with a sponge.

I took a pic while I was out. This is no filter. Excuse my sick face haha

I was like whaaaat! No flashback and I didn’t need a filter. Nice!

Bottom line I was impressed by these products and the price point is bonus! I need to get my hands on their highlighting powders. I’m thinking about reviewing some more drugstore makeup. Let me know some of your faves!

Thanks for stopping by! Have a great night lovelies!

My Review on Wet N Wild’s MegaLast Liquid Catsuit Matte Lipstick

Hey babes!

I wanted to share my review on the newest liquid matte lipsticks from Wet n Wild called MegaLast Liquid Catsuit. The colors I picked up were Pink Really Hard, Nudist Peach, and Nudie Patootie. They are 0.21 oz and are $4.99 a piece.

Here’s the description from the Wet n Wild website:

What glides on like butter, feels like a second skin and wont budge? Our Liquid Catsuit Matte Lipstick! Made with glammed out superpowers, it goes on glossy yet transforms into a high – pigmented matte finish with some serious staying power. Read our lips This color is going nowhere.

~Glides on glossy and transforms into high – pigmented matte finish

They swatched really well. Here’s what each color looked on me.

Top to bottom: Pink Really Hard, Nudist Peach, and Nudie Patootie.

My thoughts:

They went on really nice. Creamy even. They didn’t have a weird smell. There wasn’t any streaking. I will test out how long they last in the next couple of days. I am in love with these!! I was honestly surprised at how awesome these are. I haven’t had a lot of luck when it comes to drugstore makeup. They are a steal at this price and I plan on getting more in different colors.

That’s it for tonight folks! Hope you liked my review.

Have a great night! XOXO Laura

My Thoughts on Honey Potion Antioxidant Renewing and Hydrating Face Mask by Farmacy

Hola loves!

I received a sample of Honey Potion Antioxidant Renewing and Hydrating Face Mask by Farmacy in my January Play! by Sephora box and I was stoked to try it. Lately my face has been feeling super dry so when I saw it was hydrating, I was like I need this on my face NOW!

Here is what their website says on this product:

An intensely moisturizing combination of honey (a natural humectant used since ancient times), propolis (a healing antiseptic found in beehives) and amino acid-rich royal jelly, it enhances skin renewal for a younger appearance.

This super hydrating mask with natural honey sugars is rich in amino acids and essential B vitamins.

It gently warms and transforms into a rich cream as it’s massaged into the face, soothing and revitalizing the skin.

The ingenious magnetic spatula attaches to the top so you’ll never lose it.

Here is a pic of the sample I received:

How to use (I pulled this off the website because instructions weren’t included):

First cleanse and tone the skin then use the spatula to scoop the mask and spread a thick layer gently across the face from forehead to chin (avoiding direct contact with eye and lip areas). Massage for 1-2 minutes while it warms and transforms into a white cream. Leave on for 10-15 minutes then rinse off. Follow with your favorite Farmacy day or night treatment.

My Thoughts:

I’ve been using this for about a month. While I do like it because it does make my skin feel soft, I wasn’t totally in love with it. I haven’t seen any firming results but maybe with continued use I may. This isn’t a bad product. If you can get your hands on a sample, I recommend trying it out. I will leave the link below in case any of you want to check it out for yourself.

I hope you found this review helpful. These are my thoughts and opinions.

Be back later!

Roomie Wars

Title: Roomie Wars

Author: Kat T. Masen

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: July 12

Synopsis

Zoey

Turning thirty is overrated. Who said you had to be married with a fabulous career and three kids? I had a great life. Single, freedom to do whatever I please, and best of all, stay home on a Friday night in my sweats, eating pizza while listening to the best of the ’80s.

I’m fine.

Drew

When a woman says she’s fine, she’s not fine. Zoey had it all. Stunning looks, ambition, the whole package. Then he fucked her up. He broke her.

And now I’m left picking up the pieces…again.

Zoey Richards, strong-willed and driven, settled on the geeky struggling med student to share her apartment with, not the perfect-in-every-way stud who would just distract her and undoubtedly break her heart.

When her ex comes back into the picture, Zoey seeks revenge and enlists her roommate’s help. All Zoey and Drew need to do is pretend to be a couple for one night. But one night can change everything. Refusing to break their “roomie code,” and in an effort to deny their feelings for each other, a war erupts between Zoey and Drew.

She lives in the past; he, for the future. If opposites attract, will these two gamble their friendship for a chance at love?

Roomie Wars Teaser

Excerpt

“What’s wrong with being single? Sex isn’t everything,” I play it off. “Besides, lots of people masturbate and it’s perfectly healthy. In fact, studies have shown that people who masturbate daily have longer and happier lifespans than those that don’t.”

“Says the man who has a revolving door in his bedroom.” She rolls her eyes. “And you’re trying to sell masturbation to me over the touch of a man?”

“Yes.” I act confidently. “But it’s different for a male. The whole sex thing. It doesn’t matter how many women we sleep with.”

“No it’s not, Drew. Women equally have that urge. That need to get down and dirty as much as a man. It’s just not as widely accepted for women to feel that way without being called a tramp.”

“You don’t need a guy to validate yourself.” I sound like a fucking hypocrite, given that I was trying to push her onto Rob that day at the beach. But that was different. And it was before I thought I was going to lose her. Things have changed. Jesus fucking Christ, would you listen to yourself! What is all this ‘feelings’ bullshit going on in my head?!

Roomie Wars by Kat T. Masen is a fun, emotional, and sexy read. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and omg!! LOVED it!! Loved it so hard. Once I started, I couldn’t put it down. I neglected all chores and duties while reading this book. Can’t blame a gal for finding a great read! Zoey, Zoey, my dear Zoey. What a character. I saw a lot of myself in Zoey. I related to her in so many ways. Oh and Drew? *le sigh* I couldn’t get him out of my head, I mean not that I wanted to because he’s hot. He has left an imprint on my heart. I can totally crush on a book guy right?

If you like funny and sexy romances, this book is for you! I can’t wait to read more from this author! I give this 5 stars!

SCARS
By Bestselling Author Jaimie Roberts

I had the perfect school, the perfect friends—the perfect life …

At least, that’s what I thought.

But you changed all that.

You are always there … Always watching … Always waiting in the shadows. You send me flowers and messages. You stalk me, trace my every movement…

Until that one day, in a silly game of Seven Minutes in Heaven, when I finally get to feel you—have a taste of you …

It left me wanting more.

One catastrophic day, my wish is granted.

Just past my eighteenth birthday, tragedy strikes and I watch my family die before my eyes.

You are there. You rescue me. You choose my life over my older sister’s, and I hate you for that. I hate you for taking me and imprisoning me. You say it’s for my sake, but I know it’s for your own. You make me see that my life could be much worse without you in it…

You make me see true darkness.

It is in that darkness you make me desperate for your presence, your touch, your caress. You make me need you… You make it impossible for me to live without you… And then, eventually…

You make me fall in love with you.

Secrets will always wound the ones twisted within their web of lies… But the ones I’m tangled in … are deadly.

WARNING: Although this book (overall) is not a dark read, one chapter is an exception, and contains the following triggers: childhood sexual/emotional abuse with some intensity in one particular scene.

He pulls his head back leaving the lingering smell of spice invading my nostrils. It makes them flare violently, trying to take in as much of him as possible. Once he does pull back, he lingers for a moment and my heart beats rapidly against my chest. Can he feel it? Can he hear the boom, boom, boom sound thumping against my ribcage? It’s almost deafening me.
“Trust me,” he says, leaning in to touch my lips with his. At first he moves in slow, coaxing my mouth open a little. I suck in his breath, taking every morsel of his minty fragrance. I’m not sure why my body is reacting to his every move, but it’s almost as if it’s seeking out something, and that something is this mysterious patterned stranger standing in front of me coaxing my mouth open to meet his.

Scars by Jaimie Roberts is a thrilling, exciting, and heart wrenching read. I went through so many emotions while reading this book. I was hooked right from the beginning. I wanted nothing more than to get lost in this story for awhile.

The story is amazing and so were the characters. Lily is truly a good person. She sees the good in people and cares for her family and friends. Another character I really loved was J. I’m not going to say much more cause I don’t want to ruin anything for anyone. This was the first book I’ve read by this author and I am now a fan! I can’t wait to read more from this author. I give this book 5 stars!!!
